1 3/4" OCC Carving Knife

The OCC knives (formerly called Shipley Knives) have been one of our best selling knives and they have just been re-introduced to the market. This new generation of knives are made from O1 tool steel and go through a unique tempering process. All the blades have a flatter grind which delivers a nice, easy cut! The handles are made from native Missouri Walnut. The OCC Carving Knife has a 1 3/4" blade and approximate handle length is 4 1/2".  All knives are made by Mike Shipley.

1 3/4 (Shipley) OCCT carving knife

Posted by Arn Vertrea on Aug 8th 2024

Most of my carving tools are OCCT, and I love them all. When I say most of my tools Im saying that I own enough OCCT tools to open my own carving tool business, LOL. This 1 3/4 knife is different, and better than any knife I have of any brand. Its narrow enough that it can be used as a turning knife yet strong enough that I can cut off big chips of wood without a concern that the knife will break. However, I do not pry with this knife because its tip is thin, as a detailing knife ought to be. The thinness of this knife's tip is what make it such a useful detailing tool. I came on this website today to order a second one but unfortunately for ya'll I mustve purched the last one because they are out of them now. Another nice feature of this knife is that its walnut handle is shorter than the handles on the OCCT roughout knives. When a carver looks over OCCT tools, the ones that have never used one, may think that the blocky handles are unfinished and would be uncomfortable to their hands when used for a long session of carving.
Actually because OCCT doesnt use any finish on their tools the natural texture of the wood handles, especially the walnut handles, seem to grip you back but dont feel sticky. The blocky shape of the handles gives my hand a good purchase on the tools that aid me in controlling my cuts all the while reducing cramping and fatigue of my hands.

    OCCT 1 3/4" DETAIL KNIFE

Posted by Arn Vertrea' on Aug 6th 2024

Ive been carving for 40 years. I started out using high quality pocket knives that I had reprofiled the blades to suit my purposes. This meant that I had to always carry three pocket knives of the whittler, congress, and stockman configurations. Id put the knives in one pocket along with a piece of an old belt that I had dressed with dtropping compound. In my other front posket I carried the piece of wood that I was working on and a mechanical pencil.
I still enjoy whittling with pocket knives.
One day I decided to watch the caricature Carving Club on YouTube and they ruined my life, lol. I bought some palm gouges and an official woodcarving knife and a bonafied sharpening strop. Well chips started flying to the point that I nearly blocked my way out of my front and back doors due to the woodchips piling up sgainst them. Shucks, I even broke down and purchased a brand new bandsaw. That thing has certainly cut down on the length of time that I was having to spend when I had to start each carving with a block of wood and then reduce it into a toughout before I could actually begin carving my project.
About four years ago I stumbled upon OCCT at s Woodcraft Store in Memphis. Oh man!!! What a difference in the ease of carving these tools have made in ability to carve wood and also the quality of my cuts upon wood. I dont get chatter marks or split-outs like I did with the other brands of knives and gouges I had been using.
I just bought a 1 3/4" detail knife that cuts like a light saber.
Dont waste your time and money buying one of those over-priced, impossible to find, knives with the fancy handles, thst can only be found on Ebay, sold by scalpers for 5X what theyre worth. OCCT tools cut better, their flat grind cuts better than that other brsnd's convex ground blades, plus OCCT uses 01 tool steel that is tempered just right so their edge last a long time snd is easy to freshen up using only a leather strop.

    Game Changer

I'm new to carving/whittling. Started with a Beaver Craft set. Not great. Can't seem to get them sharp, and that may be on me. Then tried a few Flexcut. Much Better. Enough better to keep me in the hobby. Then I was able to get this knife. What a difference! Sharp out of the package and easy to keep sharp. I'll continue to use these, as long as I can get them!

I wish I could tell you how much difference it makes having a quality knife like this OOCT knife. I'm going to chuck all the others I purchased and buy a couple more sizes. GREAT KNIFE!

    Absolute best

I ordered this knife plus another on the evening of the 6th and it arrived all the way across the country on the afternoon of the 9th. Best service ever, so 5 stars just for that. The knife itself is the best I’ve ever carved with. Great all around carving knife, thick enough to do roughing and fine enough to do detail work. Really the only knife I’ll need for 90% of my work. Comfy for long sessions and able to be modified if i ever want to give the handle a different shape. Super sharp out of the package and carved through basswood like butter. Highly recommend. Be careful though. Poked a hole in the palm of my gloves and left a wicked deep cut so treat them respectfully

I have used a Ron Wells knife for 20 years and it was time to look for a replacement. I am very pleased with this knife, I will be adding a few more of these knives to my shop. Nice packaging and fast shipping!
